Rifle

Our rifle range is a short walk from most of the camp sites and is located at "k" on the map. The range is a covered platform that allows up to eight shooters to use the range at once. The range also has an uncovered platform for shotgun use. The range is fully equipped with 22 caliber rifles as well as 20 gauge and 12 gauge shotguns. Camp Mattatuck also offers a black powder shooting program. Under no circumstances can anyone bring firearms or ammunition to camp.

On Sunday evening, all troops will go through rifle orientation in our amphitheater. Our shooting sports staff will provide the safety rules for the range and provide some background as to the commands followed while on the range.

In the morning during the week, troops are invited to go to on troop shoots and every Friday morning we host a Scoutmaster Shoot from 9 – 12 AM. In the afternoon, the staff teaches Rifle Shooting merit badge, then opens the range for open shoot, where scouts can work on their marksmanship.

ShotgunShotgunThe shotgun shooting and black power programs are older scout programs and have certain qualifications that must be met by scouts and adults alike. The ages are 14 and older for shotgun and 16 and older for black powder.
